".SIT" and ".ZIP" files. Huh?

Some Macintosh software products on this site are distributed as ".SIT" or ".ZIP" files. SIT files and ZIP files are files that are stuffed or compressed. Compressed files are quicker to download and have, over the years, become somewhat of a standard way to distribute Macintosh files.

Most recently, Apple has added the ability to compress and de-compress ZIP files right within Mac OSX itself. To de-compress a Macintosh ZIP file (such as "TinyBooks.zip"), just double-click it.

To "un-stuff" (that is, to decompress) a SIT file, you need to use a program called "StuffIt Expander". For many years, Apple automatically would install a copy of StuffIt Expander on all systems. If you can't find a copy of StuffIt Expander on your hard disk, you can download a fresh copy for free. Here's the link...http://www.stuffit.com/mac/

By the way, if you do need to download a copy of StuffIt Expander using the above link, you might want to be aware that Allume sells many products with the StuffIt name (StuffIt Standard, StuffIt Deluxe, etc.) that are NOT free. If all you need to do is un-stuff a ".SIT" file, you only need to download the free program called StuffIt Expander.
